The Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute (KoAGI) will participate in the upcoming IUCN World Conservation Congress (WCC) 2025 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. KoAGI is set to highlight its major conservation project at this global event. The Congress, held from October 9-15, is one of the world's largest conservation gatherings, bringing together leaders from across the globe to set priorities and drive action on pressing environmental challenges.
In collaboration with the Korea Forest Service (KFS), KoAGI will host an exhibition booth to showcase its mission and world-class facilities. A central focus will be the Baekdudaegan Global Seed Vault (BGSV), underscoring its vital role in safeguarding global plant biodiversity and opening new opportunities for international seed conservation partnerships.
A major highlight of KoAGI’s participation will be a special event co-hosted with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The session, titled "From Vulnerability to Resilience: Seed Conservation Actions for SIDS," will take place on October 9 at the Jeju Pavilion. It will emphasize the urgent importance of conserving wild plants in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) — nations uniquely vulnerable to climate change and biodiversity loss. During the session, KoAGI will present its SIDS39 Seed Conservation Project, a dedicated initiative designed to support these island nations.
Sang-Taek Sim, President of KoAGI, said: "Participating in the IUCN Congress is a tremendous opportunity. We are eager to share our expertise, particularly through our event on SIDS conservation, and to demonstrate how facilities like BGSV can serve as a global resource for building a resilient future for all."
KoAGI’s engagement at the WCC is expected to further strengthen its international network, fostering collaborations that advance its mission to conserve plant resources for future generations.
